Coaching

One of the biggest questions I get about coaching scientists is “what do you actually do when you coach someone?”

Let me start by sharing who hires me for coaching and why.

  • the postdoctoral fellow who knows they no longer want a career in bench science and wants to figure out their next career.

  • the scientist wanting to secure a promotion or tenure.
  • the principal investigator wanting to prioritize many responsibilities and be more efficient at work.
  • the postdoctoral fellow new to Singapore that needs support through an industry job search.

In these examples and more, my clients have a problem they want solved or a goal they want achieved. They are looking for support, a thinking partner and accountability as they tackle these issues.

“Most progress happens when a client is willing to take responsibility for their situation and honestly look at their efforts.”

Coaching is a conversation that is designed to raise awareness and lead to action. The awareness in career coaching can be around values, skills, talents and interests, to help identify possible career paths. In professional coaching we work on behavior change. In every situation understanding mindset and motivations is important. I support my clients by asking questions to enhance their own resourcefulness and together we co-create a way forward to their desired outcomes.

I typically coach for 1 hour in person or by Skype at a frequency of every two weeks.  We coach for 3, 6 or 12 months with longer periods being more effective at supporting change.
